Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai was one of the most influential Christian leaders Nigeria ever produced. Renowned for his passionate evangelism, powerful preaching, and humanitarian efforts, he spent more than six decades spreading the Christian faith across Nigeria and beyond. From humble beginnings in southeastern Nigeria, he grew into a respected spiritual leader, founding the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA), helping establish the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), and creating educational, medical, and scholarship initiatives that positively impacted thousands of people.

Uma Ukpai was born on January 7, 1945, in Asaga, Ohafia Local Government Area of present-day Abia State, Nigeria. Raised in a modest Igbo family, he faced hardship at an early age when his father died while he was only ten years old. This loss placed significant responsibilities on his shoulders and shaped his outlook on life.

Rather than being discouraged by adversity, Ukpai developed compassion for disadvantaged people and a strong determination to succeed. He often spoke about his struggles growing up, explaining that those experiences helped him understand the challenges faced by poor families.

At the age of 13, in 1958, he embraced Christianity, a decision that became the foundation of his future ministry and lifelong mission.

Rev. Uma Ukpai began his ministry in the early 1970s after responding to what he described as a divine calling to evangelism. He launched the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA) from his living room in Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, with only a small group of followers and a vision to reach nations with the gospel.

Over time, the ministry expanded into one of Nigeria’s most prominent non-denominational evangelical organizations. The UUEA became widely known for large crusades, healing services, prophetic ministry, and teachings focused on holiness and spiritual growth.

In 1975, Rev. Uma Ukpai married Pastor Philomena Uma Ukpai (née Awa). Their relationship began during the Nigerian Civil War, and together they built a strong partnership in ministry and family life.

The couple had eight biological children and adopted one child. They also experienced profound personal loss when two of their children died in the same automobile accident.

Despite the tragedy, Rev. Ukpai continued with a previously scheduled crusade shortly after their burial, an action many viewed as a demonstration of extraordinary faith and resilience.

He frequently emphasized perseverance and trust in God, often saying that life’s challenges could become opportunities for growth and victory.

Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80. According to family members and ministry representatives, he had been managing age-related health concerns before his death.

News of his passing generated tributes from political leaders, church organizations, and countless individuals who had benefited from his ministry. National and international Christian communities celebrated his life and contributions through memorial services and thanksgiving events.
